Musk’s xAI said to be in talks to raise $20b

Elon Musk’s xAI Holdings is in talks with investors to raise about US$20 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter.

This funding round could value the company at over US$120 billion.

XAI Holdings was established in March 2025 through the merger of X, formerly known as Twitter, and Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI.

The funds could help manage debt acquired when Musk took Twitter private and rebranded it as X.

Discussions are in early stages, with the company aiming to secure the funds in the coming months. The final amount raised could exceed US$20 billion, though no terms have been finalized.

XAI Holdings did not respond to requests for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The unprecedented scale of AI funding reflects a fundamental shift in venture capital priorities

The proposed $20 billion funding for XAI Holdings reflects how dramatically AI investment has accelerated, with global VC funding for AI companies exceeding $100 billion in 2024, an 80% increase from the previous year’s $55.6 billion 1.

This would be the second-largest startup funding round ever recorded, trailing only OpenAI’s $40 billion financing, and would push AI’s dominance in venture capital even further beyond the 33% of all global funding it already commands 1.

The valuation of XAI Holdings at over $120 billion significantly exceeds traditional metrics for social media platforms, with X (formerly Twitter) valued at just $33 billion in the merger while xAI was valued at $80 billion, showing how investors are prioritizing AI capabilities over established media businesses 2.

This funding environment represents a dramatic departure from historical patterns, where even the largest Series A rounds from previous decades typically capped around $200 million, as seen with Airwatch’s record-setting round in 2013 3.

2️⃣ Musk’s debt strategy highlights both the opportunities and hazards of leveraged acquisitions

X’s current financial situation reveals the burden of acquisition debt, with monthly debt servicing costs around $200 million and annual interest expenses exceeding $1.3 billion by the end of 2024 4.

Despite generating nearly $1.5 billion in annual EBITDA, the company’s debt obligations consume most operational profits, creating pressure to find alternative funding sources or revenue models 4.
