Musk’s xAI reports $1.5b net loss in Q3

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI reported a net loss of US$1.5 billion for the September quarter, up from US$1 billion in Q1, according to internal documents reviewed by Bloomberg.

The company’s revenue nearly doubled quarter-over-quarter to US$107 million for the three months ended September 30, 2025, but sales still trail its annual target of US$500 million.

xAI spent US$7.8 billion in cash in the first nine months of 2025, mainly on data centers, talent, and software development.

The company aims to develop AI that could eventually power humanoid robots, such as Tesla’s Optimus.

Gross profit reached US$63 million in Q3, up from US$14 million in the previous quarter, but EBITDA losses hit US$2.4 billion through September, exceeding earlier projections.

xAI recently closed a US$20 billion equity round, valuing it at US$230 billion, with investors including Nvidia, Valor Equity Partners, and the Qatar Investment Authority.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

How xAI’s $7.8B cash burn stacks up

  • xAI spent $7.8 billion through September 2025 on data centers, talent, and software.
  • Microsoft deployed 750,000 to 900,000 H100-equivalent GPUs (Nvidia data center accelerators used for AI training) by end of 2024, and Meta about 600,000 1. xAI runs about 230,000 GPUs, including 30,000 GB200s (Nvidia Grace Blackwell GB200 accelerators) 2.
  • Colossus 1, xAI’s first large GPU cluster in Memphis, was retrofitted in 122 days 3. Colossus 2 reached about 200 MW of cooling within six months, versus timelines over a year 4.
  • Environmental groups say 35 temporary gas turbines ran without permits, which triggered Clean Air Act violation claims and community pushback that could slow growth 5.

Infrastructure vendors see near-term openings in Memphis power and cooling

  • Colossus 2 is scaling toward more than 1 gigawatt (GW) of power, possibly the largest AI data center 4. About 460 MW of gas turbines are installed or being built via a Solaris Energy Infrastructure joint venture (a power infrastructure developer) targeting about 1.1 GW by mid-2027 4.
  • Power and cooling vendors or fiber providers can win work as powering 50 million H100s would need about 35 GW or about 35 nuclear plants 2.
  • Real estate developers and builders see work as xAI studies data centers plus land by the Southaven power plant in Mississippi 4. Renewable developers can bid on a 30 MW solar farm, with 100 MW planned, and air monitors measured a 79% jump in peak nitrogen dioxide after operations began 6.
