Musk’s xAI reportedly in talks to raise $15b at $230b valuation

xAI, Elon Musk’s AI startup, is in advanced talks to raise US$15 billion in equity at a US$230 billion valuation, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The terms were reportedly shared with investors by Musk’s wealth manager, Jared Birchall, though it is unclear if the valuation is pre- or post-money.

xAI, launched in July 2023 as a rival to OpenAI, merged with Musk’s social media platform X in March 2025 at a disclosed valuation of US$113 billion.

The startup has been expanding its data center operations and investing in infrastructure, including property in Memphis, Tennessee, for its planned Colossus supercomputer.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

xAI’s valuation vs. Grok revenue and spending

  • Investors face a US$15 billion raise at a US$230 billion valuation while Grok, the flagship chatbot, made about US$88 million in Q3 2025 and could reach US$300 million for 2025 1. That multiple sits far above peers and fuels doubts about real sales momentum 1.
  • Funding totals US$42 billion since launch with less than US$1 billion in revenue 1. Monthly spend sits near US$1 billion, and Grok 4 compute cost about US$500 million, which keeps profits distant 1.
  • Grok has about 30 million monthly active users, which trails ChatGPT by a wide margin 1. Subscriptions priced from US$30 to US$300 drive most revenue, and no enterprise or API figures are public, so investors lack clarity on cash flow despite a Musk brand lift 1.

Memphis infrastructure buildout creates procurement opportunities for power and construction vendors

  • Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors and cooling vendors can pitch into the Memphis Colossus build 2. The project needs a graywater facility (recycled wastewater), 208 Tesla Megapack grid-scale batteries and new fiber networks 2.
  • Power equipment suppliers can target the 550-acre solar farm near Colossus I and a second 150 megawatt (MW) substation slated for fall 23. xAI plans to grow from 200,000 to 1 million GPUs, which will pull steady demand for transformers, switchgear and backup systems 4.
  • Developers with industrial site managers should track permits and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) power allocations 2. Graywater will travel 7.2 miles to Colossus II 2. Decisions by the Shelby County Health Department, the local public health regulator, on turbine permits give early cues on scope and timing 3.
