Musk’s xAI co-founder steps down

Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI co-founder Tony Wu has resigned, according to a post on X.

Several other founding members, including Igor Babuschkin, Kyle Kosic, and Christian Szegedy, have also left the company, while Greg Yang announced last month he would step back due to health reasons.

Wu said he was moving on to his next chapter.

xAI, launched in 2023 by Musk and a team of 12, aims to compete with firms like OpenAI and Google.

The company has faced criticism and regulatory investigations over its Grok AI chatbot and image generator, linked to non-consensual deepfake images.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The departure is part of a wider leadership exodus at Musk’s companies

  • Wus resignation fits a broader churn across Elon Musks companies. About 66% of Musks direct reports have left since 2021 1.
  • xAI has now seen four co-founders leave or step back since launching in 2023. Tony Wu joins Christian Szegedy, Igor Babuschkin, and Greg Yang 2.
  • Several weeks earlier, xAI reorganized teams. Co-founder Guodong Zhang took charge of post-training plus pre-training, and he assumed groups that had reported to Wu 2.

Executive departures could complicate xAIs efforts to compete and integrate into SpaceX

  • Wu ran the reasoning organization and started reporting directly to Musk last year. His departure leaves a knowledge hole as xAI tries to close the gap with Google and OpenAI 2.
  • In his announcement, Wu wrote that a small team armed with AIs can move mountains. He argued that exits from big AI labs can fuel smaller rivals that move faster 2.
  • Investors may worry about steady turnover as xAI folds into SpaceX. SpaceX acquired xAI last week in a US$250 billion deal 2.
