Musk’s xAI CFO quits after 3 months, sources say

Mike Liberatore, chief financial officer of xAI, has left the company after just a few months, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Liberatore, who joined xAI in April after working at Airbnb, reportedly departed at the end of July.

During his time at xAI, he was involved in the company’s US$5 billion debt raise and an additional US$5 billion equity round, with nearly half of the equity coming from SpaceX.

He also oversaw part of the company’s data center expansion in Memphis.

His exit follows several other executive departures, including general counsel Robert Keele, who left in August, and senior lawyer Raghu Rao, who left around the same time.

xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin also announced his departure last month to start a venture capital firm (VC) focused on AI safety research.

Linda Yaccarino, former CEO of X, resigned in July after issues related to xAI’s chatbot, Grok.

xAI acquired X in late March.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Musk-led companies face disproportionately high executive turnover rates

xAI’s recent departures reflect a broader pattern of leadership instability at Musk-led companies that extends beyond normal tech industry churn.

Tesla experiences a 44% annual turnover rate among executives reporting directly to Musk, significantly higher than the tech sector’s overall rate of 13.2%23.

At xAI specifically, key executives are leaving after remarkably short tenures—CFO Mike Liberatore departed after just four months, while general counsel Robert Keele left after slightly over a year, explicitly citing “differences in worldview” with Musk1.

This pattern is concerning given xAI’s current scale and ambitions. The company secured $10 billion in combined debt and equity funding, with SpaceX contributing nearly half of the equity portion, which represents a significant cross-investment between Musk entities1.

The rapid leadership churn comes at a critical moment as xAI expands its Memphis data center operations and attempts to compete with established AI leaders like OpenAI and Google.
