Musk’s xAI to build Saudi data center with Nvidia chips
xAI, Elon Musk’s AI startup, plans to build a 500-megawatt data center in Saudi Arabia in partnership with the state-backed AI firm Humain.
The announcement was made by Musk alongside Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at a US-Saudi investment forum in Washington.
The planned data center will use chips from Nvidia.
xAI, known for developing the chatbot Grok, is competing with OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI sector.
While Humain works with Nvidia and other chip makers, Saudi Arabia does not yet have US approval to purchase the most advanced semiconductors.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Export licenses will drive the 500MW data center timeline
- The US plans to approve the first sales of advanced AI chips to Saudi Arabia’s Humain. The package covers tens of thousands of semiconductors and adds China-related security terms 1
- A senior official at a Saudi AI investment fund said the country would divest from China if the US asked. Humain’s CEO pledged to avoid buying equipment from Huawei 1
- Humain’s CEO expects access to US-made AI chips by early 2026. The company plans to open its first data centers then, which hints the planned xAI facility in Saudi Arabia could face the same timing tied to export approvals 2
- The proposed agreement gives Saudi Arabia a large pool of AI chips for uses pre-approved by the US government. That setup avoids repeated export requests for later expansions 2
Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) and infrastructure vendors can move early on the 500MW build
- A 500MW AI site needs big orders across construction, power systems, and international fiber links 3
- Humain is building a 50MW pilot with 18,000 Nvidia GPUs that should go live next year. Vendors can use it as a reference for the larger 500MW facility 4
- Saudi Arabia pitches a low-cost compute hub with ample land and cheap energy. That supports strong economics for builders and power-cooling suppliers. It also helps network contractors that can deliver at scale 2
