Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has appointed Jack Garabedian from SpaceX to lead the human data team that trains its Grok chatbot, replacing Diego Pasini, according to an internal note.

Garabedian has worked at SpaceX since 2021, and xAI’s human data team includes hundreds of specialists who train Grok on subjects including finance and science.

Separate reporting has described xAI’s data annotation group as its largest team. The group contextualizes and categorizes raw data for Grok, with specialist tutor tracks across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, coding, finance, legal, and media.

The appointment comes as xAI struggles to recruit. The company previously paused hiring for some specialist tutor roles for Grok, amid departures of leaders overseeing medicine, legal, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and finance training.
