Musk’s Neuralink says 12 people receive brain implant chips

Neuralink said 12 people worldwide have received its brain implant chips, according to a recent announcement.

The company, founded by Elon Musk and based in the US, develops brain-computer interfaces for people with severe paralysis.

This is up from the seven recipients with severe paralysis announced in June by its partner, Barrow Neurological Institute.

Neuralink said recipients have used the devices for a combined 2,000 days and over 15,000 hours.

In July, Neuralink announced plans to run a clinical study in the UK with University College London Hospitals and Newcastle Hospitals.

Neuralink raised US$650 million in funding in June 2024.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Neuralink’s patient scaling reflects decades-long transition from lab to clinical reality

  • The jump from 7 to 12 patients in just a few months demonstrates how quickly BCI technology is moving from experimental to clinical scale, marking a significant acceleration in the field’s development timeline.
  • This rapid scaling contrasts sharply with the historical pace of BCI development, which began with basic EEG experiments in the 1960s and took decades to transition from laboratory settings to real-world applications 23.
  • The collective 15,000+ hours of device usage across patients indicates sustained, practical application rather than just proof-of-concept testing—a critical milestone that earlier BCI research struggled to achieve 1.

Massive funding influx signals investor confidence in neurotechnology’s commercial potential

  • Neuralink’s $650 million funding round in June represents a significant bet on the commercial viability of invasive BCI technology, coinciding with the company’s expansion from 7 to 12 patients 1.
  • This investment fits into a broader pattern of substantial neurotechnology funding, with 81 startups in the space collectively raising $3.7 billion, averaging $53.8 million per company 4.
  • The neurotechnology market is projected to expand from $17 billion in 2025 to $52 billion by 2034, driven by an aging population and rising brain-related disorders 5.
  • The timing of Neuralink’s funding round—just before announcing patient expansion and UK trial plans—suggests investors are backing the company’s ability to scale clinical operations internationally 1.
