Musk sues OpenAI alleging antitrust violations, fund misuse

Elon Musk’s legal team has filed for a preliminary injunction against OpenAI and several associated figures in a United States District Court in California.

The filing aims to prevent what Musk’s team describes as anticompetitive practices by the defendants.

The motion names OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman, Microsoft, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and former Microsoft VP Dee Templeton as defendants.

Musk’s attorneys allege that OpenAI’s collaboration with Microsoft has granted access to sensitive competitive information. They also claim it has restricted funding for rivals like Musk’s company, xAI.

Further accusations include claims that OpenAI altered its governance structure to shift away from its nonprofit mission.

Controversial transactions are noted, such as choosing Stripe as its payment processor. This is a company where Altman reportedly has financial ties. OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft, which invested nearly US$13 billion, is also central to the case.

OpenAI has refuted these allegations, viewing them as unfounded. A spokesperson said Musk’s claims mirror previous accusations, which OpenAI efforts have aimed to dismiss.
