Malaysia and Indonesia are trying to court Tesla CEO Elon Musk, hoping to land investments from the billionaire.

Malaysia has taken the lead with Tesla opening a sales office soon and approving SpaceX’s Starlink.

Indonesia, which at one point was ahead of the pack, is now playing catching up, promising that Musk will be visiting the republic to sign two deals: the setting up of a lithium battery factory and the approval of Starlink services for rural areas.

But there’s a problem: many citizens from these two Southeast Asian countries can’t afford Musk’s products. In fact, for electric vehicles, they are looking at cheaper alternatives from China.
