Musk says Tesla, SpaceX to build Austin ‘Terafab’ for AI chips
Elon Musk said Tesla and SpaceX will build a “Terafab” chipmaking project in Austin to supply chips for robotics, AI, and space computing.
He said the plan starts with an “advanced technology fab” that can make and test many chip types, but he gave no timeline for construction or output.
Musk has previously said the facility would target 2-nanometer chips, and he showed an image suggesting it would sit near Tesla’s Austin headquarters and factory.
He said the fab would make an edge and inference chip for Tesla vehicles, robotaxi, and Optimus, plus a higher-power chip for SpaceX and xAI, which SpaceX acquired in February.
Musk also showed a concept for AI data center satellites, and SpaceX has asked the FCC for a license to launch one million such satellites.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tesla’s past manufacturing promises offer a reality check
- The plan echoes the 4680 battery cell push. In 2020, Tesla promised 100 GWh by 2022, yet it reached an estimated 20 GWh by early 2025 1.
- The slip came from unexpected problems with the new dry electrode manufacturing process. Analysts say semiconductor fabrication is “orders of magnitude more complex” than battery production 1.
- Tesla’s strength sits in chip design rather than chip manufacturing. The chip design group has also seen notable attrition 1.
- chip architect Peter Bannon left after Elon Musk killed the Dojo project (Tesla’s in-house AI supercomputer effort) in August 2025. The exit thinned institutional know-how ahead of the new effort 1.
Project success depends on a supply chain Tesla does not control
- A leading-edge semiconductor fab relies on specialized tools from a small set of vendors, including Dutch firm ASML. Its lithography machines can carry waitlists longer than a year 2.
- As a new customer, Tesla could spend a couple of years securing equipment. That adds schedule risk before construction starts 2.
- Even TSMC has run into long delays plus higher bills at its Arizona expansion. Business Insider put the total at around $165 billion across multiple facilities 2.
- Analysts put a cutting-edge fab at $30 to $45 billion. That would sit on top of Tesla’s disclosed $20 billion capex budget this year for robotaxi plus Optimus buildouts 2.
