Musk says Nvidia self-driving tech may take years to rival Tesla

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said it may take five or six years before Nvidia’s new autonomous vehicle technology directly competes with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system.

Musk commented on X that it would take many years before self-driving technology becomes much safer than human drivers, and said traditional carmakers might delay integrating such systems at scale.

He added that this may only create competitive pressure for Tesla in several years.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced Alpamayo, a set of open AI models for autonomous driving, at the CES conference in Las Vegas on January 5.

Huang described Alpamayo as a vision language action model designed to help self-driving systems make decisions in unusual situations.

Huang also noted that Nvidia supplies technology platforms to other automakers, while Tesla develops and deploys its own FSD software.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Mercedes plans Alpamayo rollout in Q1 2026, pressuring Musk’s five-to-six-year window

  • The 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLA will ship in Q1 2026 with Nvidia’s autonomous vehicle (AV) stack including Alpamayo reasoning, the first production car with this tech 1. That runs ahead of Musk’s five-to-six-year estimate.
  • It launches at Level 2+ with human oversight, then targets Level 4 in set domains, mirroring Tesla FSD’s stepwise path 1. Alpamayo’s open-source model lets several automakers adopt at once without proprietary rebuilds.
  • Germany adopted United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Regulation R157 for Automated Lane Keeping Systems, allowing Level 3 up to 130 km/h on highways, and Mercedes holds approval in five European countries 23.
  • By 2024, over 47 Level 3-capable models were in development across 18 makers 3.

Suppliers can win with validation and compliance for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) using Nvidia’s open AV stack

  • OEMs integrating Alpamayo must secure safety certification, meet UNECE R157 for Level 3, and pass regional checks 2. That need fuels demand for outside validation, simulation, and testing.
  • Alpamayo emits a reasoning trace, a machine-readable record of model decisions, which aids transparency 1. Automakers will still hire partners to interpret and audit traces for safety and liability.
  • Germany, Japan and South Korea lead Level 3 with over 51,000 vehicles on public roads worldwide 3. Switzerland will allow autonomous driving on motorways in March 2025 4.
  • Test fleets total 6.5 million autonomous driving hours across 210 programs 3. Production scale needs added infrastructure that independent proving grounds, verification software providers, and certification consultancies can supply.
