Musk reorganizes xAI after co-founder exits

Elon Musk announced a reorganization at xAI, his AI company owned by SpaceX, citing a need to improve operational speed.

The move followed the departure of several co-founders, including Jimmy Ba and Tony Wu, though Musk did not specify how many employees were affected or if any left voluntarily.

Last week, SpaceX announced an all-stock acquisition of xAI, valued at around US$250 billion post-merger, with SpaceX itself valued at around US$1 trillion.

The deal includes xAI’s ownership of social network X and the development of the AI chatbot Grok.

The restructuring comes as xAI faces regulatory investigations in multiple regions over concerns related to the generation of non-consensual images.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

xAI’s cash burn and structure help explain its merger with SpaceX

  • Before SpaceX bought it, xAI had raised $42.1 billion in venture capital, trailing only rival OpenAI, PitchBook put it at 1.
  • Even with that war chest, xAI was labeled “lossmaking” and “cash-eating,” which suggests it needed large ongoing funding to run at its current size 2.
  • The merger aims to bring extra runway by folding xAI into SpaceX as it lines up a potential initial public offering (IPO) 2.
  • The setup could also smooth an IPO because SpaceX may be able to limit xAI financial disclosures if xAI does not meet the SEC’s “significant subsidiary” test 3.

xAI’s leadership departures and their place in a broader AI safety-and-governance debate

  • Co-founder exits at xAI fit a wider pattern across top AI labs, with accounts of departures picking up at the company 4.
  • OpenAI has gone through a similar “exodus” tied to “internal disagreements over AI safety” and its mission 5.
  • These disputes split AI leadership camps, as governance talks focus on balancing commercial pressure with safety principles 6.
  • Losing founders and safety specialists raises risks for the continuity and direction of major AI labs, including xAI, that build frontier AI systems.
