Musk outlines plan to turn X into global WeChat-style super app

Elon Musk said he plans to develop X into a superapp with multiple services, similar to China’s WeChat, during a conversation with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath.

He acquired Twitter in 2022, renamed it X, and has since discussed turning the platform into a hub for financial transactions.

In March 2025, xAI acquired X in a US$33 billion all-stock deal.

X Money has also partnered with Visa to offer online transactions and digital wallet services, with reports suggesting a customizable physical debit card tied to users’ X handles may launch soon.

Musk described his vision for X as a unified app where users can communicate and manage money.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

X Payments’ path through state rules is unclear despite 22 licenses

  • X Payments LLC is the X subsidiary seeking payments approvals. It holds money transmitter licenses (state permissions required to move and store customer funds) in 22 U.S. states as of March 2024 with recent additions in Illinois plus New Mexico plus Oregon 1. It has applied in 32 states, so a nationwide rollout is not ready yet 1.
  • State money transmitter licenses would not be enough. X must handle partnerships, compliance, and competition 2. One payments expert said X might partner with an established app like Block’s Cash App (a popular peer‑to‑peer payments service from Block, the fintech company behind Square) to use existing KYC (Know Your Customer) and fraud controls 2.
  • Elon Musk said he expected in‑app payments on X around mid‑2024 1.

Developers can prepare early for possible X commerce integrations

  • Payment platform developers and commerce integrators should watch X’s developer portal (its site for API and developer documentation) for payments updates or beta programs 3.
  • Track docs early and build prototype integrations (for example, test checkout flows) to grab a first mover edge if X enables merchant payments.
  • If X launches Pay with X merchant processing (tools that let merchants accept payments), developers who build plugins or checkout integrations before launch could win early share if the platform uses its social graph (the network of connections among users) for discovery.
