Musk, OpenAI lawsuit set for trial in Mar-May 2026
A federal jury trial for Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI is scheduled for spring 2026, which falls around March to May. The case focuses on OpenAI’s shift to a for-profit model, which Musk has publicly criticized.
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers denied Musk’s earlier request to halt the transition but agreed to expedite the proceedings.
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and later left, claims the company and CEO Sam Altman have strayed from their original mission to build AI for the public good.
OpenAI denies the allegations, arguing the for-profit model is necessary to secure funding and stay competitive.
Altman also rejected a US$97.4 billion takeover offer from a Musk-led group, stating OpenAI is not for sale.
The lawsuit highlights the growing rivalry between Musk and Altman.
Musk, who launched AI startup xAI in 2023, recently had xAI acquire his social media platform X for US$33 billion, potentially boosting his AI ambitions.
