Musk open to cooling-off period in Trump feud

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed willingness to ease tensions with US President Donald Trump following a public disagreement that escalated on June 5.

Musk reversed his decision to suspend the use of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft and showed a positive response to calls for a cooling-off period.

He referred to the public exchange as “a shame” and agreed to step back, acknowledging a suggestion from billionaire Bill Ackman to reconcile for the country’s benefit.

The dispute began when Musk criticized Trump’s tax legislation and suggested impeachment, alleging connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump responded by threatening to cut government contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla, which have received US$22.5 billion in federal contracts since 2000.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The predictable cycle of business-political alliances

Musk and Trump’s relationship follows a historical pattern seen in high-profile business-political partnerships that often begin with criticism, transform into strategic alliances, and eventually dissolve over policy differences.

Initially, Musk criticized Trump before the 2016 election, stating Trump lacked the character that reflects well on the U.S. and was “not the right guy” for the presidency12.

After Trump’s election, Musk shifted to a supportive role, joining White House advisory boards before leaving over the Paris Climate Agreement withdrawal, demonstrating the first phase of this cyclical relationship2.

The pattern resembles other business leaders who initially oppose politicians but later align with them for practical benefits, only to separate when policy conflicts emerge or political winds shift.

This cycle illustrates how business-political relationships often function on conditional support rather than ideological alignment, with both parties calculating their own interests throughout different phases.

2️⃣ Social media transforms political conflicts into real-time public spectacles

The Trump-Musk feud represents a fundamental shift in how political conflicts unfold, with social media enabling unprecedented real-time public confrontations between powerful figures.

Unlike traditional political disputes that might have been managed through intermediaries or behind closed doors, Musk responded to Trump’s Oval Office comments in real-time on social media, creating a simultaneous public dialogue visible to millions3.
