Elon Musk has appointed Anthony Armstrong, a former Morgan Stanley banker, as chief financial officer of his AI group xAI.

Armstrong will oversee finance operations for both xAI and the social media platform X.

He replaces Mike Liberatore, who left earlier this year after clashes with Musk’s inner circle over corporate structure and financial targets.

Armstrong has been a close lieutenant to Musk in recent years, including during his stint in Washington.
