Musk eyes new funding for xAI: sources

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, may be preparing for a capital raise, according to sources.

The comments were reportedly made during a recent call with xAI investors, though specific details about a potential funding round were not confirmed.

Sources also indicated that xAI discussed a possible revenue run rate exceeding US$1 billion during the call.

This development follows reports from late 2024, which said that xAI was looking to raise up to US$6 billion at a valuation of US$50 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Musk’s AI journey: from existential risk warnings to competitive player

Musk’s xAI funding story represents a remarkable evolution in his relationship with artificial intelligence over the past decade.

In 2017, Musk characterized AI as potentially “more dangerous than nuclear weapons” and a possible “demon” that humanity might not be able to control, advocating strongly for regulatory oversight and ethical guidelines 1.

This caution influenced his co-founding of OpenAI in 2015 as a non-profit focused on ensuring AI benefits humanity broadly, which later received a $1 billion investment from Microsoft 2.

By 2023, Musk had shifted to becoming a major competitive player in the field he once warned about, founding xAI with the ambitious goal to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

This competitive position was cemented with xAI’s massive $6 billion funding round at a $50 billion valuation 3, making it one of the most valuable AI startups alongside former rivals OpenAI.

The merger with X further demonstrates how Musk is strategically combining his assets to compete in the AI race, creating an $80 billion entity with built-in distribution for his AI technologies.

2️⃣ The unprecedented capital consolidation in AI amid broader tech funding contraction

The scale of investment flowing into xAI reflects a remarkable concentration of venture capital into a handful of AI startups during a period of overall funding decline.

While overall startup funding declined 12% to $227 billion in 2024, AI investments surged 62% to $110 billion, capturing nearly half of all venture capital deployed globally 45.
