Musk explores blockchain for US government efficiency

Elon Musk, head of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is exploring the use of blockchain technology to enhance federal operations.

This initiative, created by an executive order from President Donald Trump, aims to modernize federal technology and reduce government spending.

Sources indicate that DOGE representatives have engaged with public blockchain platforms to assess their potential for tracking spending, securing data, and managing payments.

Experts have raised concerns about using public blockchains for governmental purposes. Campbell Harvey, a finance professor at Duke University, pointed out governance challenges due to the decentralized nature of public blockchains.

Additionally, past enterprise blockchain projects faced issues with efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

While the Trump administration is open to blockchain, it’s unclear which blockchain DOGE may choose, and discussions may not lead to actionable outcomes.
