Musk asks SpaceX IPO banks to buy Grok subscriptions
Elon Musk is requiring banks and advisers working on SpaceX’s planned IPO to buy subscriptions to Grok, his AI chatbot, The New York Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Major lenders including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Citigroup are working on the IPO, Reuters reported earlier this week.
Some banks have agreed to spend tens of millions of dollars a year on Grok and have started integrating it into their internal systems, the report said.
The move comes as SpaceX is said to be targeting a valuation above US$2 trillion in a potential listing.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Musk is pitching Grok as part of a wider AI and space story
- The Grok subscription requirement goes beyond a simple bundle. Reports say Musk recently merged SpaceX with his AI startup xAI ahead of a planned public offering, valuing xAI at about $250 billion in that transaction 1.
- That merger ties SpaceX’s rocket and satellite business to xAI, the maker of the Grok chatbot, as the IPO plans move forward 1.
- Finance professor Minmo Gahng said the combined structure lets Musk sell a “mega-story that can support a higher valuation” than either company could reach alone. It frames the IPO as a bet on a blended space and AI infrastructure company 1.
This approach could reshape how enterprise AI gets sold
- Wall Street already leans into AI. Nearly half of Morgan Stanley’s 80,000 employees use generative AI tools built with OpenAI (a leading AI company) to boost productivity 2.
- The New York Times reported Musk is leaning on the expected scale of a SpaceX IPO, plus the role of its advisers, to drive large enterprise Grok subscriptions. Some banks have agreed to spend tens of millions of dollars a year, plus they have started wiring Grok into internal systems 3.
- This could trigger head to head testing inside big banks, with Grok running alongside existing systems from providers such as OpenAI 2.
