Mozilla appoints new CEO to lead AI push

Mozilla has appointed Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as its new CEO as the company adapts to shifts in the browser market driven by AI.

Enzor-DeMeo, who was previously general manager of Firefox, replaces interim CEO Laura Chambers after her two-year tenure.

The leadership change comes as browsers with built-in AI, such as Perplexity’s Comet, seek to challenge established players like Firefox.

Major browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Opera, have also introduced AI tools to help users with tasks like research and planning.

Enzor-DeMeo said he aims to add AI features to Firefox and expand Mozilla’s product lineup, while also reducing reliance on search revenue over the next three years.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Mozilla’s search deal with Google runs through 2023, leaving little time to hit the three-year diversification target

  • The Google search deal was extended in 2020, pays an estimated $400–$450 million a year, and ends in 2023 1. That timeline squeezes CEO Enzor-DeMeo’s three-year plan to cut reliance.
  • Search income has covered 75–95% of Mozilla’s budget since 2006, so products like its Virtual Private Network (VPN) and AI features must scale fast to replace hundreds of millions 1.
  • In 2020, more than 250 roles were cut in a push for products that can fund themselves, which leaves the new chief racing to grow AI work while building steady revenue before the deal may end 1.

AI infrastructure providers can position for Mozilla’s open-source AI push as it builds alternatives to Big Tech

  • Mozilla.ai runs as a separate business for open source AI and ships any-llm, a unified interface for large language models (LLMs), plus an Agent Platform in private beta, with work guided by Mozilla’s manifesto on user control and broad access 2.
  • Providers of model hosting, inference APIs, or agent orchestration can plug into this setup to reach developers who want transparency, data ownership, and open standards outside closed ecosystems 2.
  • Browsers are one access point among many for AI 2. Partners can build cross-platform apps that span web, desktop, and mobile.
