Mozilla to add AI Window feature to Firefox
Mozilla is developing a new AI Window feature for Firefox, allowing users to interact with an AI assistant while browsing.
The company, which develops the Firefox browser, said this feature will be optional and can be turned on or off at any time.
Current AI integrations in Firefox include an AI chatbot sidebar for desktop, and a Shake to Summarize function on iOS.
Mozilla is inviting users to join a waitlist for early access and feedback on the AI Window.
No launch date for the AI Window has been announced.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Mozilla has not said which AI models power AI Window or how data moves, which matters for privacy
- Firefox’s sidebar includes Anthropic’s Claude; ChatGPT; Google Gemini; Mistral AI’s Le Chat Mistral; Microsoft Copilot in Firefox 143 1. Mozilla says users will be able to choose a model in AI Window but shared few details 2. It has not said if it will use the same providers, run models on device, or add new cloud services 2.
- Mozilla says it gives users control and privacy 1. The chatbot feature sends selected text, prompts, and page titles to third-party providers 1. Firefox cannot see the conversations 1.
- People need to know how AI Window works 3. It could process data on device like Firefox’s PDF alt-text (alternative text) accessibility feature, or it could send information to outside providers. Without that, users and enterprises cannot judge if it offers stronger privacy than current browser AI features 3.
Enterprise information technology (IT) teams need policies for AI Window, which will drive demand for tools to control browser AI
- Mozilla is building enterprise policies to turn off AI features in Firefox 3. Preferences can hide AI user interface (UI) elements or block use 3.
- Security and mobile device management vendors (tools used by administrators to manage corporate laptops plus phones) could build policy templates with automated controls if Mozilla exposes enterprise configuration keys (administrative settings) for AI Window, similar to browser.ml.chat.enabled 3.
- Managing AI features already involves preferences such as browser.ml.enable, browser.ml.chat.enabled and browser.ml.linkPreview.optin 3. Enterprises benefit from a single place to manage these across Firefox deployments 3.
