Motorola Solutions is acquiring D-Fend for US$1.5 billion as demand rises for systems that can counter hostile drones.

Founded in Israel in 2016, D-Fend develops counter-drone technology. It has raised US$67 million and was valued at about US$250 million in its last funding round in 2024.

Its EnforceAir system uses radio frequency signals to detect drone communication links and take control of some aircraft, and the company said EnforceAir2 was vetted for airport use.

Such systems work best against drones that rely on detectable RF links. Analysts say RF-only is insufficient against newer threats, including fibre-optic and other non-RF-controlled drones.

The deal would add active counter-drone capabilities to Motorola’s broader public safety platform, which already offers counter-uncrewed aircraft system tools and has integrated detection into its CommandCentral Aware software.

Sales to US police departments and local agencies may still face legal limits because only five federal agencies now have counter-drone authority. A 2025 House bill would pilot some state and local use under federal oversight.

The wider market is projected at 25.1% annual growth through 2030, with civil demand rising across airports, ports, prisons, public venues, and critical infrastructure.
