Morgan Stanley launches bitcoin ETF with $34m inflows
Morgan Stanley’s spot bitcoin ETF, MSBT, started trading in the US on April 8, with more than 1.6 million shares traded and about US$34 million in inflows in early trading.
The fund charges a 0.14% expense ratio, the lowest among US spot bitcoin ETFs.
MSBT enters a market led by BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, which has gathered more than US$53 billion in assets since its January 2024 launch, and some experts expect the new fund to draw money from existing products.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The new fund follows a shift in Morgan Stanley client access to crypto
- Morgan Stanley now lets its financial advisors offer crypto funds to any client, even if the client has a smaller portfolio or a lower risk profile 1.
- The change removes an earlier rule that required at least US$1.5 million in assets plus an aggressive risk profile 1.
- Eligibility now includes every account type, including retirement accounts. The earlier approach limited crypto funds to taxable brokerage accounts 1.
- For oversight, Morgan Stanley will use automated monitoring to limit excessive crypto concentration. Separately, the firm’s global investment committee suggested an initial crypto allocation of up to 4%, based on investor goals 1.
Morgan Stanley steps up the fee fight and blends old finance with crypto
- The fund charges 0.14%, below BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust fee of 0.25% 2.
- That price cut may push bitcoin exchange-traded product providers to keep lowering fees, since cost can decide where assets flow 2.
- The setup pairs crypto firms such as Coinbase, which will custody the bitcoin, with traditional financial firms such as BNY, formerly known as Bank of New York Mellon, serving as administrator and transfer agent plus handling accounting, recordkeeping, and cash management 3.
- Morgan Stanley frames the exchange-traded product format as a familiar way to hold digital assets through structures investors “understand and trust” 3.
