Morgan Stanley eyes spot bitcoin ETF debut on NYSE
Morgan Stanley could launch a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund on NYSE Arca on April 8 under ticker MBST/MSBT, according to an exchange listing notice cited by ETF analyst Eric Balchunas.
The fund will hold bitcoin directly, and will charge a 0.14% annual fee, undercutting several existing bitcoin ETFs as competition intensifies.
The move comes as US spot bitcoin ETFs continue to attract strong inflows since their debut last year.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The ETF is just the entry point to a much larger crypto ecosystem
- The fund sits inside a wider push that includes an application to form a national trust bank called Morgan Stanley Digital Trust, National Association, to handle in-house digital asset custody plus trading services 1.
- The lineup goes past Bitcoin. Filings already cover spot exchange-traded funds for Solana, a blockchain network with its own cryptocurrency, plus Ether, the cryptocurrency tied to the Ethereum blockchain, to support a multi-asset platform 2.
- Morgan Stanley executives also confirmed plans for yield-generating services and lending tied to digital assets 3.
- The approach builds internal crypto plumbing, instead of leaning on outside providers 1.
Morgan Stanley’s playbook pressures both crypto natives and Wall Street rivals
- Crypto now sits inside the wealth management division, which puts pressure on crypto-native exchanges, meaning companies built primarily around cryptocurrency trading, by pairing trading access with a familiar brand 2.
- Other large banks may need to move past partnerships, then build dedicated, regulated crypto infrastructure to keep up 1.
- The 0.14% fee undercuts rivals. Scale lets large financial firms squeeze margins until crypto access looks like a low-cost utility 4.
- Spot ETFs track the same Bitcoin price, so fees plus distribution matter most. That edge tends to sit with institutions that already have large client networks 4.
