French AI startup Mistral unveiled Mistral Large 4 on October 6. The company is offering preview access to developers, cybersecurity leaders, and state authorities ahead of a broader release later in October.

The reviewed material said the model still trails frontier systems in some areas, including coding. Mistral said it trained the model over two months on 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell graphics processing units in its European data centers.

Mistral plans to release the model’s weights. However, the reviewed material does not say what license terms would apply.

A public benchmark page compares Mistral Large 4 with DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813, but the reviewed material provides no coding-specific scores. The preview for state authorities also fits Mistral’s broader push for European sovereign AI and reported efforts to pitch for defense contracts.

Mistral raised 3 billion euros (US$3.4 billion) in a September series D funding round at a 21 billion euros (US$23.6 billion) valuation.
