Mistral CEO warns of risks from AI market concentration
France’s Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch warned at the India AI Impact Summit about risks from high market concentration in AI.
He expressed concern over US firms like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, funded or owned by major US tech giants.
Mensch noted these companies keep their models closed, limiting transparency and customization, unlike Mistral’s open-weight models.
Mistral, based in Paris, is Europe’s leading AI competitor but has much less funding than US rivals.
The company was valued at nearly €12 billion (US$14.2 billion) after a €1.3 billion investment in September.
OpenAI is raising funds that could value it above US$850 billion, while Anthropic recently raised US$30 billion at a US$380 billion valuation.
Mensch warned about the risks of excessive leverage and abuse from concentration in AI power.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Mistral is backed by a different kind of monopoly
- The €1.3 billion investment came from the Dutch chip-equipment maker ASML, not a venture capital firm 1.
- The deal gives ASML about an 11% stake after counting all potential shares and a seat on Mistral’s strategic committee 1.
- ASML is the only supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines used to make the most advanced microchips 2.
- The partnership plans to use Mistral’s AI across ASML’s products plus research, development, and operations, which links Mistral’s growth to a supply-chain bottleneck 1.
Beyond open vs. closed, AI labs still rely on cloud giants
- Mistral’s ceo argues against closed models, yet cloud concentration still shapes what AI labs can build 3.
- Amazon, Microsoft, and Google hold 31%, 24%, and 11% of the cloud infrastructure market, which totals 66% and lets them earn from AI firms that rent computing 3.
- Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon are expected to add $300 billion in 2025 spending on data centers plus related infrastructure 4.
- That build-out can add new ties to governments and utilities when firms land public tax subsidies plus discounted energy rates, shifting some costs to taxpayers and residential electricity customers 4.
