Mistral AI nears $14b valuation with new funding

Mistral AI, a French AI startup, is close to securing €2 billion (US$2.33 billion) in new funding that would value the company at €12 billion (US$14 billion), Bloomberg reported.

Founded in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Timothée Lacroix, and Guillaume Lample, Mistral develops open-source language models, a chatbot for European users called Le Chat, and other AI services.

The company previously raised over €1 billion (US$1.16 billion) from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, and Bpifrance, and was most recently valued at €5.8 billion (US$6.76 billion) in June 2024.

Mistral is also developing an AI cloud service in France with Nvidia and has held talks to raise additional debt funding for this project from French lenders.

The reported new investment comes as global AI firms, including Anthropic and OpenAI, have recently raised large funding rounds.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ European AI faces structural funding disadvantages despite individual successes

Mistral’s €12 billion valuation represents a rare European AI success story, but it highlights the broader challenges facing the region’s AI ambitions.

Despite this milestone, Europe captured only 12% of global AI venture capital in 2024—$12.8 billion out of $110 billion total—while the US secured 74% of funding 1.

The EU faces persistent structural issues including underfunding and reliance on non-EU infrastructure that could undermine long-term competitiveness 2.

Mistral’s rapid growth from a $260 million seed valuation to $6.2 billion in just over a year demonstrates that European AI companies can achieve exceptional individual scaling 3.

However, this success occurs within a system where European startups must compete for limited regional capital while their US counterparts access significantly deeper funding pools, potentially affecting the pace of innovation and market expansion across the continent.

2️⃣ AI valuations increasingly disconnect from current revenue fundamentals

Mistral’s €12 billion valuation comes despite generating approximately $30 million in revenue during 2024, illustrating the current AI market’s focus on future potential over present performance 3.

This pattern extends across the AI sector, where OpenAI expects $3.6 billion in revenue for 2024 but anticipates losses exceeding $5 billion, yet maintains a $157 billion valuation 4.
