Microsoft’s sales chief takes sabbatical during layoffs plan

Microsoft’s chief commercial officer, Judson Althoff, will take a two-month sabbatical, according to a company spokesperson.

He is expected to return in September, following the end of Microsoft’s fiscal year on June 30.

The announcement comes as Microsoft plans significant layoffs, primarily affecting its sales division.

The move aims to manage costs amid rising expenses related to artificial intelligence.

In May, Microsoft laid off 6,000 employees, mostly in product and engineering roles. Sales and marketing teams were largely unaffected.

The company typically makes organizational changes at the close of its fiscal year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tech layoff patterns reveal strategic realignment toward AI

Microsoft’s current wave of layoffs targeting sales roles represents a shift from its May 2025 cuts that primarily affected product and engineering positions, showing how companies are sequentially restructuring different departments.

The company has reportedly invested approximately $80 billion in AI infrastructure during this fiscal year while simultaneously reducing its workforce, illustrating how resources are being reallocated from traditional roles to emerging technologies1.

This pattern extends beyond Microsoft, with over 62,000 tech jobs eliminated in the first half of 2025 across major companies including Amazon, Intel, and Meta as the industry pivots toward AI capabilities1.

A World Economic Forum report indicates this trend will continue, with 48% of U.S. employers planning workforce reductions specifically due to AI implementation2.

The tech sector’s employment volatility reflects a fundamental restructuring where companies are prioritizing roles aligned with AI while eliminating positions that can be automated or made redundant.

2️⃣ Fiscal year timing reveals deliberate layoff strategy

Microsoft’s decision to implement layoffs at its fiscal year-end (June 30) follows an established pattern in the company’s restructuring approach, demonstrating how organizational changes are deliberately timed.
