Microsoft President Brad Smith has called for increased United States government funding for quantum computing research, citing competition with China as a significant concern.
In a statement released on April 28, 2025, Smith emphasized the risks to US economic and national security if China advances in quantum computing technology.
Smith urged the Biden administration to renew and expand the National Quantum Initiative Act and increase funding for programs like the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) quantum computing tests.
He also advocated for strengthening the educational pipeline for quantum-related skills, expediting immigration for Ph.D. holders in quantum fields, and investing in a domestic supply chain for quantum components.
