Microsoft to ramp up hiring as AI use expands, CEO says
Microsoft plans to increase hiring in the coming year, CEO Satya Nadella said. He explained that future headcount growth will be shaped by the adoption of AI tools across the company.
Microsoft’s workforce stayed flat at 228,000 in the fiscal year ending in June, with over 6,000 layoffs during that period and another 9,000 in July.
Nadella expects employees to spend the next year adapting to AI features in Microsoft 365 and GitHub Copilot, built on models from Anthropic and OpenAI.
As staff become more proficient, hiring will resume with greater productivity per employee.
The shift comes as Microsoft reported a 12% year-on-year revenue rise and its highest operating margin since 2002, while other tech giants like Amazon also adjust workforces amid the AI push.
