Microsoft tests new AI model that could rival OpenAI

Microsoft has started public testing of its own AI language model, MAI-1-preview, aiming to reduce its reliance on OpenAI for powering AI features in products like Copilot.

The model is available for evaluation on LMArena, a website for benchmarking AI models.

Microsoft said it will gradually introduce MAI-1-preview for select Copilot text features over the coming weeks to gather user feedback.

Developers can request early access through an online form.

On LMArena, MAI-1-preview ranked 13th for text tasks, behind models from companies including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI.

Microsoft said the model was trained using around 15,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs and a cluster of Nvidia GB200 chips.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic partnerships can evolve into direct competition as markets mature

Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI illustrates how today’s strategic partner can become tomorrow’s rival in rapidly evolving tech markets.

The companies began as close allies in 2019 when Microsoft invested $1 billion and became OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider through Azure 2. Yet just five years later, Microsoft has invested over $13 billion total while simultaneously developing competing AI models and adding OpenAI to its list of competitors in annual reports 1.

This shift reflects OpenAI’s massive growth—now valued at $500 billion with ChatGPT reaching 700 million weekly users—which has transformed it from a research partner into a potential threat to Microsoft’s AI dominance 1.

The competitive dynamic has practical implications: OpenAI now spreads its infrastructure needs across multiple cloud providers including CoreWeave, Google, and Oracle, rather than relying solely on Microsoft’s Azure 1.

This pattern of partnership-to-competition is becoming increasingly common in AI, where initial collaborations help companies build capabilities before they inevitably compete for the same market opportunities.

2️⃣ Tech giants prioritize talent acquisition over internal development for AI capabilities

Microsoft’s approach to building its MAI-1 model reveals how companies are using strategic hiring to rapidly develop competitive AI technologies.
