Microsoft, SoftBank reportedly in talks to invest $2b in UK’s Wayve

Wayve, a British autonomous driving technology firm, is reportedly in talks with Microsoft and SoftBank to raise up to US$2 billion.

The potential deal could value Wayve at about US$8 billion.

Wayve operates in Britain and the US and is expanding testing and development to Germany and Japan.

Founded in 2017, Wayve raised over US$1 billion last year in a round led by SoftBank, with support from Nvidia.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Wayve’s financial runway may not support an $8 billion valuation without immediate revenue milestones

  • Wayve held £21.31 million cash and £18.26 million shareholders’ funds 1. Current creditors were £10.58 million per Companies In The UK, a UK corporate registry data service, with the latest results as of 14 October 2025; the latest annual accounts were to 31 August 2024 1. The totals leave a thin cushion after more than $1 billion raised in 2024. That adds pressure to book near-term revenue to support an $8 billion value.
  • The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code places the company in experimental research and development, not commercial transport services 1. This keeps it in a research phase rather than revenue work. Overseas testing needs spend on infrastructure, regulatory approvals, and local partners.

Autonomous Vehicle (AV) safety certification providers should target Germany’s Level 4 regulatory framework as Wayve expands testing

  • Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority sets Level 4 rules for high automation within a defined operational area. Vehicles need accident-minimization systems 2 and a black box that records position, speed, and environmental conditions 3. Permits run up to 4 years with reporting during tests and after accidents 3. That creates steady demand for compliance tools.
  • Operational approval in Germany limits AVs to government-approved areas, or geofenced zones 3. Vendors can line up ISO 26262 functional safety tools. Offer cybersecurity that meets manufacturer cybersecurity duties 4. Provide data recorders that comply with German traffic law and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 4.
