Microsoft signs 100 MW solar power deal with Japan’s Shizen Energy

Microsoft has signed a deal to purchase 100 megawatts of solar power from Shizen Energy, a developer based in Japan.

The agreement covers output from four solar projects — one operational and three under construction — which will supply power to Microsoft for 20 years.

Microsoft operates two data centers in Japan and plans to expand its compute capacity with a US$2.9 billion investment in the country over the next year.

The company has been increasing its renewable energy purchases, recently contracting over 1 gigawatt of solar capacity since the start of 2025.

Solar power has become a popular choice for tech firms and data center operators due to its relatively low cost and fast construction timelines.
