Microsoft shares fall 7% on slowing cloud growth

Microsoft shares declined 7% after hours on January 28 following its quarterly earnings report, which showed slowing cloud growth.

The company reported revenue of US$81.3 billion, beating expectations, and earnings per share of US$4.1, above estimates.

Cloud segment revenue increased 39%, with Azure growth at 37% to 38%, slightly below analyst estimates.

Operating margin guidance was lighter than expected at 45.1%.

Microsoft’s second-quarter revenue rose 16.7% year-on-year, with net income reaching US$38.5 billion.

The company’s commercial remaining performance obligation stood at US$625 billion, driven by a US$250 billion cloud commitment with OpenAI.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Key details of the OpenAI cloud deal need to be clarified

  • It was disclosed that OpenAI’s $250 billion cloud commitment equals about 45% of Microsoft’s commercial remaining performance obligation (RPO), which raises concentration risk.
  • The contract term, any take-or-pay clauses (contract terms that require a minimum payment even if usage falls short), and the schedule for revenue recognition should be verified.
  • Disclosures on collectability risk should be reviewed to judge backlog quality, future cash-flow timing, and margin durability. Gross margin was the narrowest in three years this quarter.

Low Copilot penetration creates a wide opening for the partner ecosystem

  • Tech operators and investors can focus on the gap between Microsoft 365’s commercial user base and its AI add-on.
  • Microsoft said it has 15 million paid seats for the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on, versus more than 450 million paid commercial Microsoft 365 seats.
  • That adoption rate leaves room for third-party vendors to sell IT readiness work, staff training, plus governance. These services can help enterprise IT teams defend the spend and pursue an estimated 116% return 1.
  • Tools for cost control or security can also gain share, based on an estimate that partners earn $8.45 in services for every $1 Microsoft earns 2.
