Microsoft to retire Outlook Lite Android app in May
Microsoft will shut down Outlook Lite on May 26, ending the Android app it launched in 2022 for phones with limited storage and regions with slower internet connections.
The company had already scheduled the app for retirement and said existing users will lose functionality next month.
Microsoft said Outlook Lite users can access their email, calendar items, and attachments by signing in to the standard Outlook Mobile app, and the app will direct users to the Google Play Store to download it.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
This shutdown is the final step in a long-planned phase-out
- Microsoft scheduled Outlook Lite for retirement, so the closure follows an existing plan 1.
- Microsoft is focusing work on Microsoft Outlook (Outlook Mobile), which supports more email features plus stronger security and compliance tools 1.
- After May 25, 2026, Outlook Lite will still open, but email access will be disabled and in-app navigation plus other functions will fail 1.
The death of ‘lite’ signals a shift from accessibility to ecosystem integration
- Outlook Lite targeted entry-level smartphones and low-bandwidth environments, a common way to add users in emerging markets 2.
- Microsoft is ending the separate app because upkeep for a trimmed version no longer makes sense compared with the reach on the lowest-end phones.
- The change steers people to the standard Outlook app, which can also funnel adoption of Microsoft 365, the company’s bundle of workplace software and cloud services 2.
- Microsoft is also choosing one consistent app experience over serving devices with tight storage plus slower internet connections 2.
