Microsoft restructures GitHub after CEO resigns
Microsoft will restructure GitHub following the resignation of CEO Thomas Dohmke, who announced his departure after nearly four years to pursue new opportunities outside Microsoft and GitHub.
GitHub, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2018 for US$7.5 billion, will no longer have a CEO.
Its leadership team will report more directly to Microsoft’s CoreAI team, led by former Meta executive Jay Parikh.
Dohmke said he will remain through the end of 2025 to support the transition.
The CoreAI team includes Microsoft’s platform and tools division and Dev Div teams, focusing on developing AI platforms and tools for the company and its customers.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ GitHub’s explosive growth validates Microsoft’s acquisition strategy
Microsoft’s $7.5 billion GitHub acquisition in 2018 has delivered remarkable results, with the platform growing from 28 million users and 85 million repositories at the time of purchase to over 150 million developers and 420 million repositories today12.
This represents more than 400% user growth in roughly six years, along with nearly 500% repository growth, making it one of the most successful large-scale tech acquisitions in recent history.
The growth becomes even more impressive considering that 90% of Fortune 100 companies now rely on GitHub for software development1, indicating Microsoft successfully maintained developer trust while scaling the platform.
This expansion occurred despite initial skepticism from the open-source community, who worried Microsoft might compromise GitHub’s developer-first culture after decades of being perceived as hostile to open-source software3.
2️⃣ Eliminating the CEO role signals the final phase of acquisition integration
Microsoft’s decision to eliminate GitHub’s CEO position represents a predictable evolution from acquisition to full organizational absorption, following a common pattern in tech industry consolidations.
When Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018, it maintained the company’s independence with dedicated leadership, but the organizational structure has gradually shifted, first with reporting changes in 2021, then integration into the CoreAI team, and now the removal of the CEO role entirely4.
This mirrors the typical lifecycle of major tech acquisitions, where companies initially preserve acquired entities’ autonomy to maintain culture and talent, then progressively integrate them as strategic priorities evolve.
