Microsoft reports $24.1b in OpenAI-linked revenue
Microsoft said in a filing last week that it recorded US$24.1 billion in revenue from OpenAI in the year ended June, giving investors a clearer view of how much of Microsoft’s AI business is tied to its partner.
The company said at the end of the March quarter that its AI annual recurring revenue run rate had surpassed US$37 billion, a management metric that includes revenue from AI customers and AI-specific product sales.
That suggests OpenAI-related revenue made up more than half of Microsoft’s AI business for the period, based on an estimate of roughly US$34 billion in AI revenue for the fiscal year ended in June.
Microsoft did not update its total AI sales in its latest earnings report.
A Microsoft spokesperson said the US$24.1 billion figure includes all sales to OpenAI and Microsoft’s revenue share from the company.
Analysts said it remains unclear how much of that total came from services vs. revenue-sharing.
The concentration comes as OpenAI broadens its infrastructure base, including an up to US$11.9 billion deal with CoreWeave.
