Microsoft raises Surface prices on memory crunch

Microsoft has raised prices across its Surface device lineup as higher memory and component costs from an industrywide chip shortage hit PC makers.

The 12-inch Surface Pro now starts at US$1,050 vs. US$800 at launch, the 13-inch Surface Pro 11th Edition is priced at US$1,500 vs. US$1,000 in 2024, and the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop is up by as much as US$500.

Microsoft said it updated prices for its current-generation Surface hardware after recent cost increases, while the broader memory crunch tied partly to AI infrastructure spending has also pushed Dell, Lenovo, and HP to raise PC prices and limit some configurations.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The memory price shock is rewriting PC manufacturing economics

  • Microsoft raised prices as PC build costs climb across the industry.
  • Memory chips once made up 15% to 18% of a PC’s material costs. Forecasts now put them at 35% to 40% 1.
  • The jump ties to steep contracts, with Q1 2026 prices for PC dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), a common type of computer memory, expected to more than double from the prior quarter 2.
  • The hit reaches earnings. One report said HP expects storage price increases to cut earnings per share by about $0.30 in fiscal 2026 3.

Microsoft’s price hikes create an opening for Apple’s budget Mac

  • As memory shortages push Microsoft and other Windows PC makers toward higher prices, Apple is heading the other way with its $599 MacBook Neo 4.
  • Apple can hold the line because it is “structurally hedged” through large cash reserves plus long-term supply agreements that lock in memory 12 to 24 months ahead 5.
  • The price aims at the sub-$700 notebook market. The segment totals about 75 million units a year, with Windows PCs and Google’s ChromeOS operating system historically above 95% share 4.
  • A lower entry price broadens access to Apple’s ecosystem. That can draw first-time buyers into iCloud, its cloud storage service, and iMessage, its messaging platform, while also weakening the long-term customer base for Windows PCs 4.
