Microsoft plans first voluntary US employee buyout program

Microsoft will offer a one-time voluntary buyout to some US employees, its first such program, as it manages costs during a broader AI-driven shake-up in tech.

About 7% of Microsoft’s US workforce is eligible.

The program applies to US employees at senior director level and below whose age and years at the company add up to at least 70, and staff on sales incentive plans cannot join.

Microsoft had 228,000 employees as of June 2025, including 125,000 in the US, and eligible workers and their managers will receive details on May 7.

The company is also changing annual rewards by no longer requiring managers to link stock awards to cash bonuses and by cutting manager pay options to five from nine.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Rising AI costs are driving the buyouts

  • The buyouts look tied to cost control as spending climbs. Microsoft is on track to spend up to $120 billion in fiscal 2026, mostly on AI infrastructure such as data centers and related hardware 1.
  • Across tech, companies are trimming payroll while putting more money into AI.
  • Meta, parent of Facebook and Instagram, plans to cut about 8,000 jobs. It also told investors that 2026 expenses could reach $169 billion, pushed up by AI infrastructure and pay for AI hires 2.

AI is changing which skills matter and who gets rewarded

  • The formula targets workers whose age plus years of service equals at least 70. That signals a change in the mix of employees companies want to keep 3.
  • Employees with long experience inside Microsoft may carry less weight if AI tools can sift through decades of internal records quickly 3.
  • Microsoft also changed pay rules. Managers no longer have to link stock awards directly to cash bonuses, which gives them more room to reward top performers 3.
  • In tech, job security may rely less on tenure and more on whether a worker’s skills fit a company’s AI plans 3.
