Microsoft opens its first data center in Indonesia

Microsoft has officially launched its first data center in Indonesia, called the Indonesia Central Cloud Region, on May 27, 2025, at Jakarta.

Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, represented President Prabowo Subianto at the event.

The government sees this as a key milestone in boosting the country’s digital infrastructure.

Meutya said the launch reflects the private sector’s confidence in Indonesia’s digital policies and ability to manage technologies like cloud computing and AI.

The data center is expected to contribute around US$ 2.5 billion to the economy and create 60,000 jobs by 2028.

Microsoft will also support digital training for 1 million people, with 840,000 already participating in AI capability-building.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Indonesia’s strategic positioning in Southeast Asia’s data center race

Microsoft’s data center launch marks Indonesia’s emergence as a major competitor to Singapore in the regional data center landscape.

With 84 data centers, Indonesia now ranks as the second-largest data center market in Southeast Asia, behind only Singapore’s 99 facilities 1.

This investment follows a pattern established by other tech giants, such as Amazon’s nearly $1 billion planned investment in Indonesia and Google’s announcement of Indonesia as a cloud services hub in Asia 2.

The timing is strategic as Southeast Asian markets remain significantly underpenetrated, estimated at 55-70% below the capacity of mature markets like the U.S. and China 1.

Indonesia’s geographic advantages, including access to renewable energy sources (207 GW potential from solar and 29 GW from geothermal), position it favorably for sustainable data center development compared to land-constrained Singapore.

2️⃣ Data sovereignty driving the localization of cloud infrastructure

Microsoft’s Indonesia Central Cloud Region reflects a broader regional trend driven by data sovereignty regulations that require local data storage and processing.
