Microsoft opened its fourth data center region in India, with services now running from Hyderabad, as part of a US$20.5 billion investment to expand cloud and AI infrastructure in the country.

Microsoft said customers including Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, and PB Fintech signed up for early access.

Local cloud capacity is particularly relevant for finance and payments firms because a Reserve Bank of India rule requires payment systems providers to keep user data stored in India.

The launch also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to build AI infrastructure and strengthen local technology capabilities.
