Microsoft, US national lab use AI to speed nuclear permit process

Microsoft and the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) announced a partnership on July 16, 2025, to explore the use of AI in the nuclear power plant permitting process in the US.

The project uses Microsoft’s AI to draft engineering and safety reports based on past license applications, with human oversight for editing and accuracy.

This oversight will allow users to edit and refine the AI-generated content.

Scott Ferrara, deputy division director for nuclear safety and regulatory research at INL, said that the technology could also enhance energy output from existing nuclear plants.

By analyzing data from prior upgrades, the AI may assist facilities in preparing license amendment requests to increase power generation.

This effort is part of a broader push to speed up nuclear permitting using advanced technologies.
