Microsoft modifies deal with OpenAI amid $500b venture

Microsoft has modified its agreement with OpenAI following the announcement of a new joint venture with Oracle and Japan’s SoftBank Group.

The venture, named “Stargate,” aims to develop up to US$500 billion in AI data centers across the US, according to sources familiar with the plans.

OpenAI can now expand its computing capacity for research and model training while collaborating with Oracle.

However, Microsoft retains exclusive rights to offer OpenAI’s primary revenue-generating API services, which Oracle will not host.

Microsoft also confirmed that key elements of its partnership with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing agreements and API exclusivity, remain unchanged through their contract, which runs until 2030.
