Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, is no longer the exclusive cloud provider for the AI startup, the companies announced on Jan. 23.

Moving forward, Microsoft will maintain a “right of first refusal” for any additional capacity requests from OpenAI.

This announcement coincided with the launch of the Stargate Project, a joint initiative involving OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank.

The initiative, unveiled by former US President Donald Trump, includes an initial investment commitment of US$100 billion to expand AI infrastructure.
