Microsoft launches AI QuickStart program for SMEs in Singapore

Microsoft has launched the AI QuickStart programme in Singapore, supported by IMDA and UOB, to help enterprises deploy AI solutions within three months at costs up to S$20,000 (US$15,705).

The initiative targets both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large companies, focusing on areas such as customer engagement, content creation, and operations automation.

Participating enterprises can access curated AI solutions tailored with large language model architectures, with potential funding support from IMDA and UOB.

The programme aims to make AI adoption more accessible and practical, especially for SMEs seeking to improve efficiency and customer interactions.

Microsoft, IMDA, and UOB are collaborating to support skills development and digital transformation through related programmes like UOB FinLab AI Ready.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This programme fills a gap in Singapore’s digital plans

  • Microsoft’s AI QuickStart targets low AI use among Singapore small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), at 4.2% in 2023 1.
  • AI use remains limited even though over 94% of SMEs use digital tools in at least one of six areas 1. The areas are Cybersecurity. Cloud. E-payment. E-commerce. Data Analytics. AI.
  • The rollout fits Singapore’s Digital Enterprise Blueprint, a government plan that helps businesses adopt digital tools and aims to reach 50,000 SMEs over five years 2.
  • It also backs the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) target to help 15,000 SMEs use AI-enabled solutions through the SMEs Go Digital programme over the next two years 2.

It fits into a wider government-backed AI network

  • Microsoft joins Google and Amazon Web Services (AWS) in pledging support for Singapore’s Digital Enterprise Blueprint, which relies on several partners 2.
  • AI QuickStart may lift demand for AI skills. The government is training workers through TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA), a national programme to train and place people into tech roles 3. IMDA also said it will offer 800 AI practitioner job and training opportunities for locals through partnerships with AI Singapore and companies including AWS and Microsoft 3.
  • IMDA says it is updating governance toolkits such as AI Verify. The improved testing framework covers generative AI (GenAI) risks and aligns with US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards 3.
