Microsoft to launch affordable AI laptops with Qualcomm chips

Microsoft plans to release new laptop and tablet models featuring Qualcomm chips at lower prices, starting May 20, 2025.

The Surface 13-inch laptop will start at US$899, while the Surface Pro 12-inch tablet will be priced at US$799.

Both devices will include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus chips and offer Microsoft’s “Copilot+” AI features.

These features allow for natural language navigation and AI-generated document drafts.

AI features, previously found on devices priced over US$1,000, are now accessible on these more affordable models.

These devices aim to make AI more accessible and empower users with advanced tech at a lower cost.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Microsoft’s surface pricing strategy evolution demonstrates market expansion

Microsoft’s latest Surface devices mark a significant shift in their pricing strategy, continuing a pattern that’s been evolving for years.

When Microsoft launched its first Surface Studio in 2016, the device targeted creative professionals with a premium price tag of $2,999, positioning it as an exclusive product 1.

By 2018, Microsoft had begun moving toward more accessible price points with the Surface Laptop 2 at $999 and Surface Pro 6 at $899, broadening its potential customer base while still maintaining premium positioning 2.

The new Surface devices starting at $799 represent Microsoft’s lowest-priced offerings with advanced AI capabilities, strategically targeting budget-conscious segments like students and young professionals.

This pricing evolution aligns with industry forecasts showing consumer technology spending is expected to increase by $1.8 billion in 2025, driven largely by PC upgrades, suggesting Microsoft is positioning itself to capture this anticipated growth 3.

The company appears to be addressing the “affordability and innovation” factors that market analysts identify as key drivers of consumer purchasing decisions, particularly as users look to upgrade pandemic-era devices 4.

2️⃣ AI features becoming standard rather than premium differentiators
