Microsoft to invest $4b in second Wisconsin data center

Microsoft will invest US$4 billion to build a second data center in Wisconsin, adding to its initial US$3.3 billion project in Mount Pleasant set to open in early 2026.

The Mount Pleasant site will house Nvidia Blackwell GB200 GPUs designed for AI workloads.

Microsoft said it aims to balance its fossil fuel energy use by matching it with carbon-free energy contributions to the local grid.

A solar farm under construction 150 miles away will provide 250 megawatts of power, while the two data centers may require over 900 megawatts.

The initial data center is located on land previously intended for a Foxconn manufacturing plant and is expected to use up to 2.8 million gallons of water annually.

The second facility, planned to be similar in scale to the first, is expected to come online in 2027 or later.
