Microsoft integrates AI into India’s worker welfare, job platforms

Microsoft will integrate advanced AI features into India’s e-Shram and National Career Service (NCS) digital platforms to support informal workers.

The announcement was made during the India visit of Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella.

Both platforms run on Microsoft Azure; e-Shram is a database of informal workers, while NCS provides job-matching services.

Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service will bring multilingual access, AI-assisted job matching, predictive analytics for skill and demand trends, automated resumé creation, and personalised pathways toward formal employment.

The e-Shram platform, launched in 2021, connects workers to 18 welfare schemes such as accident insurance, public housing, medical subsidies, and farming grants.

India’s informal workforce makes up about 82% of the country’s workforce, according to the India Employment Report 2024.

The platforms have expanded social protection coverage from 24% in 2019 to 64% in 2025, benefiting over 310 million informal workers.

Microsoft’s integration depends on whether this is a pilot or a funded rollout

Microsoft and the Ministry of Labour and Employment signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), yet public sources do not say if it is a funded contract with dates or a non-binding pilot (a limited test) 1.
No public budget or exclusivity terms have been disclosed. There is no tender path, service-level agreement, or rollout plan.
