Microsoft, EY commit $1b to scale corporate AI

Microsoft and EY, a consulting and accounting firm, said they will invest more than US$1 billion to help clients move AI projects from pilot programs to large deployments.

The initial focus will include finance, tax, human resources, and supply chain work.

Microsoft will provide engineers to work with EY consultants on agentic AI projects across industries including finance, industrials, energy, consumer and retail, government, and healthcare.

The deal adds to recent AI consulting tie-ups, including Google’s US$750 million fund for partners such as McKinsey and Deloitte.

AI vendors face pressure to show returns after an MIT study in 2025 found 95% of corporate AI projects did not deliver one.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This partnership grows from years of work together

  • EY and Microsoft are widening a long-running relationship instead of starting from scratch 1.
  • EY has made Microsoft’s Business Applications Inner Circle for 19 straight years, a group limited to the top 1% of Microsoft partners worldwide 1.
  • EY also uses Microsoft tools in its own business, including a global rollout of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sales, Microsoft’s customer relationship management software, for employees. EY has also described building an enterprise-scale agentic AI operating system 1.
  • The move fits a wider pattern. PwC US said in 2023 it would invest US$1 billion over three years to expand AI services with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service and OpenAI’s GPT-4/ChatGPT 2.

Big consulting firms are taking a larger role in enterprise AI

  • The agreement targets a common reason many company AI efforts fail to produce financial returns 3.
  • An MIT report said the AI model is rarely the main problem. Companies more often struggle with a learning gap and poor workflow integration 4.
  • The same report put partnership-based buying at about a 67% success rate. Internally built projects succeeded about one-third as often 4.
  • By pairing Microsoft technology with EY’s rollout work, firms like these aim to turn AI tools into business results. Microsoft says more than 85% of Fortune 500 companies use its AI products 5.
